Creating products with one's own brand is not trivial: you need a reliable production partner, capable of respecting specific recipes, guaranteeing food safety, working on relatively small batches and managing personalised packaging. In this guide we tell you how private label of artisan jams works, from minimum batches to timelines, from investment to go-to-market.
What is private label in artisan food
Private label – or "own brand" – is the production of products made by an industrial or artisan partner but sold under the commissioning brand. Unlike simple branding, private label allows the commissioning party to:
- Build a line coherent with its own identity
- Differentiate from competition
- Have higher margins than selling standard products
- Control the narrative around the product
For whom private label makes sense
Starred chefs and gourmet restaurants
A "chef-signed" jam is a powerful souvenir: the client takes home a piece of the experience lived in the dining room. Increases the average bill, builds loyalty, creates word of mouth.
High-end hotels
Branded jams and marmalades for breakfast, spa or amenity bag. They turn a break into a memorable experience and tell the hotel's territory.
Bistros and brunch concepts
A coherent line of jams and spreadable creams reinforces the venue's identity and opens take-away retail.
Online food brands
For those who sell curated products online but don't produce them directly, private label is an effective solution to launch their own range without investing in production facilities.
Companies for corporate gifting
Lines dedicated to Christmas gifting or corporate events: products with the company logo, in custom packaging.

The development process step by step
1. Initial brief
The commissioner shares: brand identity, final price target, desired recipe (or development request), annual projected volumes, desired packaging. Duration: 1 meeting.
2. Feasibility study
Our team technically evaluates the recipe, the necessary raw materials, costs, production timing. Prepares a detailed quote. Duration: 2-3 weeks.
3. Prototype development
We produce a small pilot batch (10-30 jars) for tasting and validation. Iterations until the desired result. Duration: 3-4 weeks.
4. Packaging design
In parallel, we work (or work with your designer) on the packaging: label, jar, capsule, possible box. Final validation before printing. Duration: 4-6 weeks.
5. Production of the first batch
Purchase of raw materials, production, labelling, quality control, packaging. Duration: 4-6 weeks from confirmation.
6. Delivery and go-to-market
Shipment to the commissioner or to the distribution warehouse. Marketing support with product photos and technical sheets.
Total time from brief to first delivery: 4-6 months on average.
The initial investment
The investment is articulated on four items:
- Recipe development: included in the service if the recipe is a variation of our existing ones. From €800 to €2,500 for completely new development.
- Packaging design: €500-2,000 if developed by us, free if provided by the client ready for print.
- Label printing dies and plates: €200-500 one-off.
- First production: depending on volume and format, from €2,500 for a minimum batch upwards.
On average, to start with 2-3 private label references, the initial investment is between €8,000 and €15,000, amortisable on the first 6-12 months of sales.
Available certifications
- HACCP: standard, on all products
- EU Organic: available with certified raw materials
- Gluten-free: certifiable on dedicated batches
- Vegan: Vegan Society certification on request
- DOP/IGP: use of certified ingredients (e.g. White Cilento Figs DOP)
The added value of the Cilento territory
The Cilento is a guarantee of authentic storytelling: land of the UNESCO Mediterranean Diet, rich in native varieties, hand-picked fruit, premium EVO oil. A private label produced in Cilento carries a powerful narrative that the chef and restaurant can leverage in their communication.
